Volunteering at the Personal Bests Events

Our fantastic volunteers are at the heart of the Personal Bests event. Working alongside our qualified coaches, they support participants to enjoy activities, build confidence and make meaningful social connections throughout the day.

We simply couldn't run the event without them, and we're delighted that many volunteers return year after year.

We are also grateful to our corporate partners who support the event through Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV), giving employees the opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills while making a real difference in the lives of adults with learning disabilities.

A recap of what volunteers do on the day:
Volunteers help make the day run smoothly and enjoyable for everyone.
This includes:
• Welcoming participants
• Helping participants move between activities
• Supporting sports activity stations alongside coaches
• Cheering people on and helping create a positive atmosphere
• Lending a hand wherever needed during the day

You don’t need to be a sports expert – enthusiasm, encouragement and being friendly are what matter most.

Jason - Winchester Personal Bests volunteer

What our Volunteers say

Thank you for having me along yesterday - I was utterly exhausted last night, but I had the best day... I was really nervous about the day, having not had any experience with working with people with learning disabilities before, but I found the autism awareness session and volunteer briefing really helped with that... The participants were absolutely amazing, and their enthusiasm and happiness was infectious... Although I was there to support the participants, it was a day of development and achievement for me too.

Mariam, Winchester Personal Bests 2025

What our Volunteers say

I think this year has been the best well managed event so far. Everything  was so under control and the teams were so lovely.

I really enjoyed the day. Pre-event communications, emails, info pack, video briefing etc. went really well. Activity leaders were excellent.

What our Volunteers say

A big thank you for allowing me to come along today. Joining in was great fun.  I thoroughly enjoyed myself . It was great to see everyone having a great time. I must say the organisation was brilliant.

Sue, Winchester Aqua Bests 2025

What our Volunteers say

As a fourth-year trainee PE teacher, I volunteered at the Chichester Personal Bests event to deepen my understanding of inclusive practice and support young people with learning disabilities. The event showed the power of sport to connect, empower and include. Inclusion isn’t just about access—it’s about belonging. I learned how structure, flexibility and small adjustments help every learner thrive. My confidence grew as I adapted communication, instruction and activity design. Volunteering was incredibly fulfilling and developed my skills.

Charlotte, Chichester Personal Bests 2025

What our Volunteers say

Our service users, staff and parents thought the Aqua Bests was even better than the Personal Bests. They thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next one next year.

Hayley, Manager of Day Service group, 2025

What our Volunteers say

My highlight was seeing everyone receive their certificates and medals—the pride on their faces was unforgettable. The experience reinforced my self-belief, and I’d tell others to do it, 100%!

Hope, Chichester Personal Bests 2025
